It looks like there are narrative similarities based upon reading your essay. However, translations of his books are now on order. It will be clearer once I’ve looked at him properly. Best of luck with this wrapping up period of your novel 🐈⬛
V is also for Van Veen of course: something very similar going on in “Ada”, I feel. The dorophones and demons of Estoty… (but is “Ada” literary fiction, or is it alternate-world sci-Fi/fantasy? Is that even a useful distinction?)
I had a French teacher, a Dr Beard, who sang the praises of “I Will Piss On Your Graves,” or at any rate mentioned it: 16-yo me just remembered the title. Vian sounds properly amazing though, and even just reading this essay has got me excited/energised for the project I’ve been putting off editing for a while now… so, thank you!
Such an interesting essay. I read all mentioned authors, besides Serge, who was a singer. Was Boris Russian as Serge? Definitely want to read B. Vian after your amazing article. Are his novels available, I am curious. Thank you for essay.
Thanks. New to me.
Did Vian read Djuna Barnes or Flann O’Brien ?
Hi Monnina, good questions. I have no idea! Do you feel they're stylistically similar?

I have not read Boris Vian. Thank you for engaging commentary and insights into a complex work.
