You're right that comparing the abolition of slavery in the US to European nations is hardly an apples-to-apples comparison, and it's not clear that any other form of government that might possibly have been adopted in 1787 would have expedited the abolition of slavery. My point is just that slavery really was a time-bomb for the US, and all the purported virtues of the democratic system proved insufficient to rectify an obvious and horrific injustice. Cheers, Sam
